At the indicated time, we'll meet in front of the Episcopal Palace in the Plaza Eduardo de Castro. Are you ready to dive into the fascinating history of this city?
We'll kick off our tour with a stroll through the historic centre of Astorga, learning about the Maragatería region and the famous mule drivers whose traditions have helped shape Astorga's identity. We'll also chat about the city's connection to chocolate—can you guess where it comes from?
As we stroll through the city, we'll admire two striking murals by local artist Da2.0—open-air artworks that capture the spirit and soul of Astorga like nothing else. Don't forget to take some photos!
Next, we'll make our way to Plaza de Santocildes, where we'll dive into the story behind Cocido Maragato, a hearty local stew that's full of flavour and tradition. Then, we'll head to the Plaza Mayor to explore the symbolism behind the grand Baroque façade of the Town Hall. If luck is on our side, we might even catch the charming bell chimes of Juan Zancuda and Colasa, the two famous figures perched above the clock tower.
We'll continue along the city's ancient walls, passing some of Astorga's hidden gems: the Sanctuary of Fátima, the Synagogue Garden, and the Domus del Oso y los Pájaros, which is one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in town. Along the way, we'll chat about the city's most iconic festivals, including its lively patron saint celebrations and the Astures y Romanos re-enactment, which brings the past vividly back to life.
Next, we'll enter the Episcopal Palace, a modernist gem designed by Antoni Gaudí. We'll explore three fascinating floors, from the elegant main level to the administrative floor and finally the basement.
