On this tour, we'll take you to discover the care that wolfdog residents receive at the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, the only refuge of its kind in Canada. We'll also drop you off in Calgary at the end of the day.
Visit the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary
At the designated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel and head east on a 1-hour drive, leaving the high mountain scenery behind as we make our way into the Alberta plains. On this tour, we'll visit the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, a conservation center dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and education of wolfdogs. You're going to love it!
Once at the sanctuary, we'll explore the facilities while watching these fascinating animals go about their lives in a controlled environment that encourages natural behaviors. Over approximately 2 hours, we'll learn how, unlike domestic dogs, these hybrid wolf animals are far more complex creatures.
Wolfdogs have a strong hierarchical structure and a communication system based on vocalizations. We'll also discover how the Yamnuska Sanctuary works to responsibly rehome these animals, many of which have been surrendered after failed domestication attempts.
We'll analyze ethological traits such as their caution toward unfamiliar stimuli and their impressive problem-solving abilities. We'll also learn to identify morphological characteristics like their robust dentition, ear positioning, and coat density, all adaptations inherited from their wild ancestors that allow them to withstand extreme climatic conditions.
After this wonderful experience, we'll continue our journey toward Calgary, where we'll say our goodbyes after a total of 5 hours. We can drop you off at a Calgary hotel or at the airport, whichever you prefer.
