Prehistoric caves adorned with rock art, dramatic canyons, breathtaking viewpoints… On this 5-day tour of Parque Nacional Cavernas do Peruaçu, we’ll explore one of the most remarkable natural treasures in the state of Minas Gerais.
Trip Details
Day 1
At the scheduled time, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Belo Horizonte and begin a journey of approximately 7 hours to Itacarambi. Along the way, we’ll make several stops so you can stretch your legs and grab a snack.
Upon arrival, we’ll check into a hotel in Itacarambi, located on the banks of the São Francisco River. Dinner will be at your leisure.
Day 2
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll travel for around 1.5 hours to the Silú area, in the heart of the national park. This protected natural space, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the great natural icons of Minas Gerais.
We’ll begin with a 3-hour hike to visit the prehistoric rock paintings of Lapa do Caboclo. After observing these ancient traces of human presence, we’ll continue along the trails to the Mata Seca, Cactus, and Lapa do Carlúcio viewpoints, further discovering the park’s extraordinary archaeological and environmental heritage.
Next, we’ll pause for lunch before heading by road to the Janelão Visitor Center. From there, we’ll set off on another 3-hour walk to explore the caves and rock art of Lapa dos Índios, Lapa Bonita, and Lapa do Boquête.
Finally, we’ll return by vehicle to our hotel in Itacarambi for dinner.
Day 3
After breakfast, we’ll once again travel to the Janelão Visitor Center for a new hiking route. This 3-hour trek will reveal more of the park’s natural wonders.
We’ll start at the 5 Torres viewpoint and visit the Lapa do Monte Sião cave. From there, we’ll continue to the Mundo Entero viewpoint, where spectacular views of the Peruaçu River canyon await.
Following a lunch break, we’ll embark on another 3-hour hike through the Arco do André area, one of the park’s most impressive natural monuments. We’ll also visit the Lapa do André cave, one of the region’s largest.
At the end of the day, we’ll return to the hotel in Itacarambi for dinner.
Day 4
After breakfast, we’ll head once more to the Janelão Visitor Center. From there, we’ll take a 2-hour walk to visit the rock paintings of Lapa dos Desenhos and Lapa do Janelão.
We’ll learn about the importance of these prehistoric remains before returning to the hotel. The rest of the day will be free for you to relax.
Day 5
After breakfast, we’ll leave Itacarambi behind and return to your hotel in Belo Horizonte, with arrival scheduled for around 5 pm.

The tour includes 4 nights of accommodation with breakfast in a 3 star hotel in Itacarambi, located on the banks of the São Francisco River. Planned accommodation is at Pousada Camaleão or similar.
