Traiguera & Cervera del Maestre Guided Tour
At 8:45 am, we'll meet at the Benicassim Tourist Office and get on the bus that'll take us to Traiguera. Here, we'll visit an estate of thousand-year-old olive groves and discover how the Valencia region's 'liquid gold' is produced.
We'll walk through the orchards and admire the Sinfo Olive Tree, one of the oldest in Europe, which in 2018 won the prize for the best monumental olive tree. As we look at the age-defying olive trees we'll learn how they're cultivated, and we'll also attend an olive oil tasting accompanied by typical cold meats.
After our olive oil tasting, we'll hop back on the bus and drive to Cervera del Maestre. We'll head to the Oil Mill Visitor Centre and explore more traditions linked to olive groves in this region. Once we've finished at the Visitor Centre, we'll spend about 1 hour touring Cervera del Maestre, famous for its medieval castle. This castle is a fortress of Arab origin, which was built to defend against the advance of Christian troops during Spain's Reconquest.
Our last stop will be back in Traiguera, at the Royal Sanctuary Virgen Fuente de la Salud. This monument, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, is also the only moment with the classification of 'Royal' in the whole province of Castellón. We'll discuss its origins, which trace all the way back to Charles V, while we look at the different elements in the complex; the hostelry, the priests' house, the kitchens, and the chapel.
The day trip will end between 2:15 pm and 2:45 pm back at the meeting point.
