With this ticket to the Valley of Cuelgamuros, you'll explore one of the main monuments of the Franco regime in Spain in the 20th century.
Why Visit the Valley of Cuelgamuros?
After the Spanish Civil War, the dictator Francisco Franco decided to build a memorial at the southern end of the Sierra de Guadarrama: the Valley of the Fallen.
A 2022 law changed the name of this monument, located in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, to the Valley of Cuelgamuros. This law also established that this space would become a place of recognition, commemoration, remembrance and homage to all the victims of Franco's regime who rest in this place.
With this ticket to the Valley of Cuelgamuros, you can visit this space at your own pace, currently conceived as a place of memory and reconciliation. The 150-metre-high (492-ft) cross and the colossal sculptures of the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, carved by Juan de Ávalos, are particularly noteworthy.
The basilica of the Valley of Cuelgamuros is the central nucleus of the whole complex. The chapels of the Virgin of Africa, La Merced and El Pilar stand out, as well as the choir, the central nave, the transept and the dome, in which a skylight decorated by the artist Santiago Padrós stands out.
You can also enjoy magnificent views of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range from the esplanade where the basilica of the Valley of Cuelgamuros and its annexed buildings are located, on the border between the Community of Madrid and the province of Segovia.
