On the day and time of your choosing, you'll access the ossuary via the entrance located at Avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tangu, 1, next to place Denfert-Rochereau.

The Origins of the Paris Catacombs

If you're up for seeing skulls and other human skeletal remains, a visit to this underground necropolis is a fascinating way to discover another side of the French capital.

But how did the Catacombs of Paris come to be? By the late 18th century, Parisian cemeteries were overflowing. Furthermore, many of them posed serious health hazards. As a result, local authorities decided to transfer the skeletal remains from various cemeteries to the tunnels hidden beneath the city. This is how the catacombs were created, and they have been open to the public since 1809.

During your visit, you'll explore the vast underground labyrinth of the catacombs. In these tunnels, you’ll see the ossuaries of more than six million Parisians. As you’ll see, the bones are piled along the walls of the underground galleries, but you may also come across macabre sculptural arrangements made from the skeletal remains. In this way, you'll discover one of the most gloomy and somber sides of the French capital.
