Matera Day Trip
After meeting at the established meeting point, we'll hit the road on a comfortable bus to Matera, one of the most picturesque cities in Italy.
Once we arrive at our destination, we'll get off the bus to begin a guided tour of the historic center of Matera, one of the oldest in the world. Did you know that its Sassi, the famous stone districts of the city carved into the Murgia Materana, have been inhabited since the Paleolithic era?
Walking through the neighborhoods of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, we'll explore the most fascinating corners of this World Heritage City and talk about its evolution over time, from the displacements of the '50s mandated by the Italian government, up to the splendor of today.
During our tour, we'll also pass in front of the most interesting Baroque temples of the city, such as the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, the Church of Santa Chiara and the beautiful Matera Cathedral, in Apulian Romanesque style. Breathtaking!
After a short break to have lunch on your own, those who wish can also access some of the magnificent rock churches of Matera (not included), like the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve or the Church of San Pietro Barisano.
At the conclusion of our excursion to Matera, we'll get back on the bus and return to the starting point, where we'll call it a day after twelve exciting hours.
