With your ticket to the Classis Ravenna Museum, you'll gain access to an innovative exhibit that narrates the history of this area in northeastern Italy. Upon arrival, be greeted by a ramp adorned with the iconic symbol of Ravenna's deep connection with the sea—the “Mosaic of the Waves.”
The innovative exhibition setup will guide you through a comprehensive and engaging historical account that spans the birth and evolution of Ravenna and its nearby port city of Classe. Did you know it was inaugurated in 2018? It was also awarded the prestigious Francovich Prize in 2021, which seeks to highlight excellence in the management and presentation of medieval heritage.
The exhibition will take you through a timeline marking the different eras of the city. Don't miss the thematic perspectives on daily life, maritime navigation and artistic production! Recent additions to the tour include the sections “Living in Ravenna” and “Praying in Ravenna”, which explore urban planning, residential and places of worship.
Spread across 600 m² (6,458 ft²) of exhibition space, this collection showcases historical everyday artifacts, ancient jars of wine, and over 150 m² (1,614 ft²) of privately collected mosaics. Some of these mosaics are remarkably large and incredibly detailed—you’ll be amazed by their craftsmanship and preservation!
What's more, the museum not only exhibits history, but also strives to educate through the use of innovative technologies, including graphic reconstructions, films, and models. The experience is completely interactive!
The Classis Ravenna Museum is open every day of the week from 10 am to 3 pm. Final admission is 50 minutes before closing time.
