At the designated time, we'll begin this guided tour of Saint-Jean-de-Luz in front of the indoor market of Les Halles.
After a short introduction to the town, which belongs to the Lapurdi region of the French Basque Country, we'll head to the Church of St John the Baptist. This church was where the wedding of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Austria, the daughter of the Spanish king Philip IV, took place.
We'll tell you about this royal wedding, along with the different Franco-Basque traditions, and then, we'll explore the commercial Rue León Gambetta toward the Place Louis XIV. Here, you'll see the house where the Sun King once lived and learn more about this monarch's stay in Saint Jean de Luz.
Continuing our tour, we'll then stroll along the Maison de l'Infante, a luxurious palace where Maria Theresa of Austria stayed before her marriage to Louis XIV. This building is found in front of the port, where you'll learn about the role the dreaded pirates played in this town in southern France.
