Matera Excursion
We'll pick you up at your hotel in Ascea and board a bus to Matera. Ready to discover one of the most beautiful and visited places in the south of Italy?
Once we arrive at our destination, we'll get off the bus and start walking through the historic center of Matera - one of the oldest in the world! We'll explore the famous Sassi di Matera, the ancient areas of the city carved into the rocky landscape of the Murgia Materana. Did you know that they have been inhabited since the Paleolithic era?
Walking through the districts of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, we'll explore the most fascinating corners of this World Heritage city and discover its history. We'll be sure to also tell you the highlights of the creation of these districts and their evolution and expansion.
During the guided tour of Matera, we'll see the Church of Santa Chiara, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi and the Cathedral of Matera, in Apulian Romanesque style.
Then, we'll have time to try the local cuisine and stop for lunch on our own. Later, if you'd like, you can check out some of Matera's amazing rock churches (not included), including the Church of San Pietro Barisano, the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, and the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve. All of them are wonderful!
At the end of the tour, we'll head back to the bus to return to the starting point, where we'll conclude the excursion twelve hours after departure.
