Want to discover what is underground Catania? On this tour, we'll head under the city in search of hidden churches, tunnels, and mysterious passageways.
We'll meet at the designated time at Piazza Stesicoro to begin to discover underground Catania. Throughout the tour, we'll walk around the city and visit 3 historical sites hidden under the earth.
Our first stop will be the Roman Amphitheatre, an important monument which, though visible above ground, forms part of our underground tour of the historic centre. The old site, which dates back to the 2nd century AD, is now located within the Greco-Roman archaeological park of Catania and is a must-see in the city.
Afterwards, we'll make our way to the Sant'Eupilo Crypt, originally a Roman tomb from the imperial era now found under the ruins of a church destroyed in World War II bombings. During our visit, we'll discover the history of the saint who gave this crypt its name, and who was one of the first martyrs who lived at the beginning of the Christian era in Catania.
We'll then head over to the San Giuliano Crypt, located under a church with the same name, and we'll learn about its fascinating history and the function that this hidden place once served.
To end this tour on a high note, we'll stop by a kiosk and offer you some snacks and a drink. Lastly, this tour will come to an end at Piazza Universià, where we'll say our goodbyes after a total of 2.5 hours.
In the case that any of the mentioned sites are inaccessible, the itinerary will be changed to include other underground sites of similar importance.
