In 1985, the diver Henri Cosquer discovered an underwater cave located in the Calanques National Park, 40 minutes from the centre of Marseille. The most striking aspect of this cave was the incredible rock art it houses. Cosquer kept his findings secret until, in 1991, some divers died attempting to access the cave, and its location became public knowledge.
After this tragedy, experts began to access the cave and identified that the rock art dates back to the Paleolithic Era. Currently, the cave is not open to visitors. As a result, in 2022, Cosquer Méditerranée was inaugurated in the port of Marseille, a modern museum that recreates the original cave down to the last detail.
With this ticket to Cosquer Méduterranée, you'll get to explore the museum with an English audio guide. The visit begins with an exhibition where you can see the diving equipment used during the discovery of the cave. Next, descending to the museum's lower floor, a vehicle on rails will take you to the different spaces that recreate the Cosquer Cave.
Throughout the visit, the audio guide will provide interesting facts about the history of rock art. Additionally, you'll get to learn the significance behind the animals and hands painted onto the Cosquer Cave walls.
On the third floor, you'll find the Mediterranean Gallery. Here, you'll get to see life-size replicas of animal species from the Ice Age. You'll also find the figure of a pregnant Homo sapiens woman, as well as many digital and audiovisual projections about the history of humanity and the impact of rising sea levels and climate changes.
The Cosquer Méditerranée Museum in Marseille is open daily from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm. Final admission is 1.5 hours before the closing time.
