Let yourselves be captivated by rural Switzerland on this day trip to the village of Appenzell. We'll visit a traditional cheese factory and go up Hoher Kasten by cable car.
Day Trip Details
At the designated time, we'll set off from the Sihlquai Bus Station parking lot in Zurich towards the northeastern region of Switzerland.
During our bus ride, we'll drive along Lake Zurich and pass next to Rapperswil Castle. From there, the journey will continue to the hills of Appenzell, where we'll visit a traditional farm in which you'll have the chance to try a glass of fresh milk from its cows.
Our next stop will be the Appenzeller cheese factory. In this factory, we'll see how raw milk is turned into Switzerland's most aromatic cheese. We'll then visit its warehouse, which holds up to 12500 wheels of cheese. We will, of course, also do a cheese tasting to sample different varieties.
After visiting the cheese factory, we'll hop onto the cable car up Hoher Kasten Mountain, whose summit is 1794 metres (5885 feet) above sea level. From the top, you'll have incredible scenic views of the Alpstein massif, the Rhine Valley, Lake Constance, and the Principality of Liechtenstein. You'll even get to see Germany and Austria! At this peak, there is also a revolving restaurant where you can grab yourself a bite to eat.
Once lunch is over, we'll take the cable car back down to the base of the mountain and make our way to the picturesque village of Appenzell. Here, we'll have a guided tour and discover the houses' wooden facades, painted beautifully with many colours.
Once we finish our guided tour of Appenzell, you'll have half an hour of free time to stroll through the village. After this, we'll begin our journey back to Zurich.
Lastly, we'll conclude this 11-hour day trip by saying our goodbyes at the starting point in Zurich.
